Day 1: Land in Zurich, train to Lucerne

The Swiss non-stop from Delhi takes about 8 hours 40 minutes to 9 hours. From Zurich Airport, Lucerne is about an hour by train. Keep the evening light: a walk across the Chapel Bridge and dinner by the lake.

Day 2: Mount Titlis or Rigi, and a lake cruise

Take the train to Engelberg (about 45 minutes) and ride the cable car up Mount Titlis for snow even in summer. With a Swiss Travel Pass the return cable car is half price. For something quieter, Rigi is free with the pass, and so are the boats on Lake Lucerne; save the cruise for late afternoon.

Day 3: Lucerne to Interlaken

The Luzern–Interlaken Express crosses the Brünig Pass in a little under two hours. Spend the afternoon at Iseltwald on Lake Brienz, or go up Harder Kulm for sunset over both lakes.

Day 4: Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe

Start early. From Interlaken Ost, the trip up takes 1 hour 37 minutes via the Eiger Express gondola from Grindelwald, or just over 2 hours on the cogwheel route through Kleine Scheidegg. Go up one way and down the other. At the top: the Sphinx terrace, the Aletsch Glacier and the Ice Palace. Carry a warm jacket even in July.

Day 5: Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald or a slow day

Keep one day unplanned. Walk the Lauterbrunnen valley past its waterfalls, ride up to car-free Mürren, or book a long lake-view lunch. After a long flight and a high-altitude day, you will be glad of it.

Day 6: GoldenPass Express to Montreux

The GoldenPass Express is a panoramic train between Interlaken and Montreux; seat reservations start from CHF 20 (about INR 2,300). In Montreux, walk the lakeside promenade to Chillon Castle, then watch the sunset over the Lavaux vineyard terraces.

Day 7: Fly home

Geneva Airport is closest to Montreux, but the Swiss non-stop to Delhi leaves from Zurich, a longer train ride away, so plan a relaxed morning. If you are flying one-stop, an open-jaw ticket (into Zurich, out of Geneva) saves that journey.

Two tips: the 8-day pass costs only about INR 4,600 more than the 6-day one and also covers your airport trains, and Jungfraujoch is cheaper outside the May–October season. Flights swing the most, so book three to four months ahead and avoid Diwali, Christmas and the May–June school holidays if you can.

• Fee: VFS Global lists the adult visa fee as Euro 90 (INR 9,400) plus a service charge of INR 2,690. The rupee amounts follow the exchange rate and can change.
