Best Time to Visit Switzerland in 2027: Month-by-Month Guide
The best time to visit Switzerland is June to September if you want green valleys, lake cruises and every mountain excursion running, and mid-December to March if you want snow, skiing and Christmas markets. For the best mix of pleasant weather, thinner crowds and fair prices, aim for September or the first half of June. If your dates are flexible, avoid November and late April, when several cable cars close for annual maintenance.
Below we cover each month, compare Switzerland in summer and Switzerland in winter, and show how costs change with the season (rupee figures are approximate, at about INR 115 to 1 Swiss franc and INR 106 to Euro 1). Still choosing a route? Start with our Switzerland tour packages from India.
Best time to visit Switzerland: the seasons at a glance

The temperatures below are long-term averages for Zurich. Mountain-top stops such as Jungfraujoch, at 3,454 metres, are far colder and can be below freezing even in July, so carry a warm layer in any month.

Switzerland month by month

December to February: snow season
This is Switzerland in winter at its most classic. Zurich's average daytime high stays around 3–5°C and nights dip just below zero. Ski resorts run at full strength from mid-December, and big areas such as Davos plan to stay open until 11 April 2027. Days are short, with only about 45 hours of sunshine in Zurich in all of December. Christmas to New Year is the priciest week; January after the New Year rush is calmer.
March and April: late snow and quiet valleys
March still offers good snow at altitude, while Lucerne and Zurich warm up to around 10°C. By April the valleys turn green and daytime highs reach about 15°C, though weather can change quickly. From late April some lifts pause for spring maintenance; for example, the cableways from Stechelberg up to Mürren are scheduled to close from 26 April to 7 May 2027. It is good value if you mainly want cities and lakes.
May and June: long days and the Indian holiday rush
Daytime highs climb to 19–22°C, snowmelt fills the waterfalls of the Lauterbrunnen valley and alpine meadows flower from June. This is also when Indian school holidays begin, so Interlaken, Lucerne and Mount Titlis get busy with Indian families. Book hotels and your Jungfrau trip early. From May to October, Jungfrau Railways also charges a compulsory seat reservation of CHF 10 (about INR 1,150) on top of the ticket.
July and August: peak summer
These are the warmest and sunniest months, with Zurich averaging 24°C and about 225 hours of sunshine in July. Every mountain pass, hiking trail and lake steamer is running. The trade-off is price: European summer holidays push hotel rates and crowds to their yearly peak.
September and October: the sweet spot
For many travellers September is the best month of all, with highs of around 19°C, clear mountain views and fewer crowds after European schools reopen. October cools to about 14°C and brings autumn colours to the vineyards above Lake Geneva. Late October is when maintenance closures begin again: the Kriens–Pilatus cableway and the Glacier 3000 cableway, for example, both closed from 19 October in 2026.
November: the quiet month
November is grey and quiet, with only about 60 hours of sunshine in Zurich. Several excursions close for a week or more (the Gornergrat railway in Zermatt is scheduled to shut from 2 to 14 November 2026), although the Jungfraujoch railway runs 365 days a year. Christmas markets start opening from around 19–20 November, which makes the last week of the month a pleasant, lower-cost alternative to December.
Switzerland in summer vs Switzerland in winter: which suits you

Most Indian travellers end up choosing between June–September and December–February.
For families with school-going children
Indian school calendars push most families into May–June or the Christmas–New Year break, both busy periods, so plan four to six months ahead. Summer is easier with younger children. A useful saving in any season is the free Swiss Family Card, which lets children aged 6 to 15 travel free on trains with a parent who holds a Swiss Travel Pass; under-6s travel free anyway. Browse our family tour packages for ideas.
For couples and honeymooners
Winter suits couples who want snow-covered villages, fondue evenings and Christmas markets, while September offers mild weather and quieter viewpoints for photographs. If you want snow underfoot without the deepest cold, February and early March are a good compromise.
For senior citizens and first-time visitors
June and September are the safest choices: comfortable temperatures, long daylight hours and every excursion open. In winter, focus on train journeys, lakeside towns and one or two glacier excursions.
Planning a Switzerland trip in December

A Switzerland trip in December means Christmas lights, markets and the first proper snow. For December 2026, the Christmas market in Zurich is scheduled from 19 November to 23 December, Montreux from 20 November to 24 December, Basel from 26 November to 23 December and Bern from 28 November to 24 December; organisers may still adjust these dates. Since most markets close on 23 or 24 December, travel in the first three weeks of December if the markets are your main reason to go.
A few practical points:
- Christmas–New Year is the busiest and most expensive week, so book early.
- Days are short. Plan mountain excursions for the morning; in winter the last train down from Jungfraujoch leaves at around 4:30 pm.
- Pack thermals, waterproof boots and gloves. Our guide on what to pack for a Europe group tour has a checklist.
- When comparing Switzerland Christmas holiday packages, look for one base in the mountains and one in a city, so you get both snow and markets without long daily transfers.
How costs change with the season

Flights, hotels and some mountain excursions cost more in summer, while rail passes and visa fees stay the same all year. Here is what changes, per person and per couple.

When to apply for your Schengen visa
Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, and you can apply up to six months before your trip. For a May or June holiday, start in February or March; for a Christmas trip, apply as soon as your dates are fixed, as appointment slots at VFS Global can be hard to get before the holidays. The adult visa fee is Euro 90 (about INR 9,500), Euro 45 for children aged 6 to 12 and free for children under 6, plus a VFS service charge. Dewan Holidays helps with visitor-visa documentation and appointments; see our Switzerland visa page. The embassy makes the final decision, and this is not legal or immigration advice.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best month to visit Switzerland?
September is the best month for most travellers. It brings mild weather (around 19°C in Zurich), clear views and fewer crowds than July and August. June is a close second if you book early.
Is December a good time to visit Switzerland?
Yes, if you want snow and Christmas markets. Expect daytime highs of around 4°C in the cities, short days and peak prices between Christmas and New Year; the first three weeks of December give you the markets at lower cost.
When can I see snow in Switzerland?
You can see snow all year at high-altitude spots such as Jungfraujoch and the Titlis glacier. For snow in villages and towns, travel between mid-December and early March.
What is the cheapest time to visit Switzerland from India?
Mid-October to mid-December, and January after the New Year rush, are usually the cheapest times. Jungfraujoch fares are also lower from November to April, but check that the excursions you want are open, as November is the main maintenance month.
Is Switzerland too cold for Indians in winter?
No, not if you dress in layers. Winter temperatures in the cities usually stay between about -1°C and 5°C, though mountain tops are far colder, so thermals, a down jacket, gloves and waterproof shoes are essential.
How early should I book a Switzerland trip from Delhi?
Book four to six months ahead for May–June, July–August or Christmas, and two to three months ahead for other months. Leave enough time for your Schengen visa.
