Flights from Delhi to Zurich

SWISS and Air India fly non-stop between Delhi and Zurich, a flight of roughly 9 to 10 hours. Typical return economy fares run at about INR 55,000– INR 80,000, with April and January among the costlier months. For May–June and the Christmas–New Year weeks, book three to four months ahead.

Schengen visa for Switzerland

Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. The fee is euro 90 for adults and euro 45 for children aged 6 to 12 (free under 6). VFS Global's Switzerland page for India currently charges around INR 2,690 per application. Processing usually takes 15 calendar days. You can apply up to 180 days before travel and no later than 15 days before. You will need travel insurance with at least euro 30,000 of medical cover and three months of bank statements, among other documents. A week's Schengen policy for a young adult is often quoted at INR 500–INR1,500; premiums rise with age.

Hotels

Expect about CHF 100–180 a night for a budget hotel or guesthouse double, and CHF 180–280 for a mid-range 3-star room that often includes breakfast. That works out to roughly INR 11,500–INR 32,000 per room per night. Rates are usually highest in January and softer in March and April.

Jungfraujoch and Mount Titlis: what the snow trips cost

Jungfraujoch

A full-fare return to Jungfraujoch costs roughly CHF 235–260 (approx. INR 27,000–INR 30,000), depending on your starting station and the season, and a CHF 10 seat reservation applies from May to October. Swiss Travel Pass holders pay about 25% less, which brings it to roughly INR 20,300–INR 23,600. If you are an early riser, ask about the "Good Morning" ticket (about CHF 169), which needs you to leave before 8 am and be back by 1 pm. Mount Titlis

Titlis is reached by cable car from Engelberg, about 45 minutes by train from Lucerne. A full-price return is CHF 102 (approx. INR 11,700), or CHF 51 (approx. INR 5,900) with a Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card. If you can afford only one snow trip, Titlis costs far less; Jungfraujoch is the bigger day out, with the Sphinx Observatory and Aletsch Glacier views. Both are at high altitude, so seniors with heart or blood-pressure conditions should check with their doctor first.

• Pick your month with care. July, August and the Christmas–New Year fortnight are the busiest. September is pleasant and less crowded, and October–November usually bring the lowest prices, though some cable cars close for maintenance in October, November and April.
