your Schengen visa applied for through Italy six to eight weeks before you fly. At a mid-range level, budget roughly INR 1.4 lakh to INR 3 lakh per person for 7 nights including return flights, or INR 2.8 lakh to INR 6 lakh for a couple, depending mostly on the season and your hotels.
This guide helps you compare an Italy tour package from Delhi with planning it yourself, and covers flights, route, days, visa and a cost table in rupees. You can also browse our Italy tour packages.
The best route for a trip to Italy from India

Most first-time visitors want three things from Italy: ancient Rome, Renaissance Florence and the canals of Venice. All three sit on one high-speed rail line, so the classic route is Rome → Florence → Venice. With more time, add the Amalfi Coast in the south or Milan and Lake Como in the north.
Flights from Delhi to Italy
Air India flies non-stop from Delhi to Rome four times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday), leaving at 1:15 pm and landing the same evening after about nine hours. It also flies non-stop to Milan, and ITA Airways has added a non-stop Delhi–Rome service. One-stop flights via the Gulf or Europe give more timings.
Economy return fares from Delhi usually start around INR 45,000 in quieter months and climb to INR 70,000–INR 95,000 in June–August. Book two to three months ahead for spring or autumn, and four to six months ahead for summer. To save a day, fly into Rome and home from Milan so you never backtrack from Venice.
Getting between cities by train
Italy's high-speed trains, run by Trenitalia (Frecciarossa) and Italo, link Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and Naples. Rome to Florence takes under two hours and Florence to Venice a little over two. Advance fares start at about Euro 19.90 (about INR 2,100), while a flexible ticket bought on the day costs around Euro 55 (about INR 5,800). Bookings usually open about four months ahead and the cheapest seats go first. If you buy a paper regional-train ticket at a station, stamp it in the green machine before boarding.
When to go: the best months for Italy
- April to June and September to October: pleasant walking weather and the best balance of crowds and price. School holidays in May and June push family fares up.
- July and August: the hottest, busiest and most expensive months.
- November to March: the cheapest flights and hotels, with shorter days. Christmas and New Year are busy in Rome and Venice.
Venice charges day-trippers aged 14 and above Euro 5 to Euro 10 on peak days (60 days between April and July in 2026). Overnight guests are exempt, one more reason to stay a night there.
Italy in 7 or 10 days: sample plans

Seven nights covers the big three cities without rushing; ten nights lets you add the coast or the lakes.
7 nights: Rome, Florence and Venice
- Day 1: Fly Delhi to Rome, check in and take an easy evening walk.
- Day 2: Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill in the morning; the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain in the evening.
- Day 3: Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica (the museums are closed on most Sundays).
- Day 4: Train to Florence; the Duomo area and sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo.
- Day 5: Uffizi Gallery in the morning, then an optional half-day trip to Pisa.
- Day 6: Train to Venice; ride the vaporetto (water bus) down the Grand Canal to the Rialto Bridge.
- Day 7: St Mark's Square early in the morning, then the islands of Murano and Burano.
- Day 8: Train to Milan for the non-stop flight to Delhi, or a one-stop flight from Venice.
10 nights: add the Amalfi Coast or Lake Como
With three extra nights, either head south from Rome to the Amalfi Coast (Positano, Amalfi and a boat day to Capri) before going north, or finish in Milan with a day at Lake Como. The coast is liveliest from spring to early autumn; Lake Como suits a slower, scenic end to the trip.
Tips for Indian travellers on the ground
- Vegetarian food is easy: pizza margherita, pasta al pomodoro, risotto and gelato are everywhere. For Jain meals, ask for "senza cipolla e aglio" (no onion or garlic) and carry snacks.
- Dress for churches: cover shoulders and knees at St Peter's and Florence's Duomo.
- Watch your bag on Rome's metro and around big railway stations.
- Pack comfortable shoes for cobbled old towns. Our packing list for a Europe group tour works for Italy too.
Schengen visa for Italy from Delhi: documents, fee and timeline
Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa for Italy. Apply to Italy if you spend the most nights there; if nights are split equally, apply to the country you enter first. In Delhi, you submit the application and give fingerprints at the VFS Global centre.
- Fee: Euro 90 for adults (about INR 9,500) and Euro 45 for children aged 6 to 12 (about INR 4,800); children under 6 pay nothing. VFS adds its own service charge of around INR 2,000.
- Timing: you can apply up to six months before travel. A decision usually takes about 15 days but can stretch in the summer rush, so apply six to eight weeks ahead for May–September trips.
- Insurance: travel medical insurance with at least Euro 30,000 cover, valid across the Schengen area, is mandatory.
- Typical documents: passport valid three months beyond your return, photographs, flight and hotel bookings, bank statements, income tax returns, a leave letter or business proof, and a day-by-day itinerary.
- Frequent travellers: under the EU's cascade rules for Indians, if you have lawfully used two Schengen visas in the last three years, you can be given a two-year multiple-entry visa.
